PGA AWARDS: ‘BIRDMAN’ WINS TOP FILM PRIZE, ‘BREAKING BAD’ TAKES DRAMA TROPHY & ‘ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK’ NABS COMEDY

By The Deadline Team January 24, 2015

Birdman took the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures at the 26th annual PGA Awards tonight in Los Angeles. The win places the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-helmed pic squarely in the frontrunner category for the Best Picture Oscar. Since 1989, those theatrical films taking the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best producer have a 75% chance of winning the top prize at the Oscars. The Lego Movie won the award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures following its snub for the corresponding Academy Award. That fact was alluded to by producer Dan Lin, who noted in his acceptance speech that the film has had “its share of wins and losses.” But, he continued, “the real win has been the friends I’ve made along the way… so I thank my friends.” Deadline’s Pete Hammond will post an analysis of the awards later tonight.

On the TV side, Breaking Bad won The Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama for the second consecutive year, and Orange Is The New Black broke Modern Family’s four-straight win streak, taking the The Danny Thomas Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Comedy.
